Tokyo 2020: The Olympic experience

Tokyo 2020 was the best professional experience I have ever had since working in the anti-doping business. Many training sessions (on site & online), many hours and a great committment of the whole MODOC team gave us the opportunity to attend such an incredible sporting event. The most important and rare in history.

Despite the COVID-19 situation, the event was finally held in the capital of Japan. Unfortunately, it was not a true full Olympic experience due to all the restrictions caused by the pandemic, but it was definetely an awesome opportunity to be part of a great team of professionals.

Regarding my stay in Tokyo, it lasted around 33-34 days in total, enough time to meet so many people from all over the world, enjoy some aspects of the city and the japanese culture and, of course, develop my main activity, which was related to the anti-doping business. I was lucky to belong the MODOC team, who was in charge of providing the software used to plan and register all the activity and information related to doping controls during the Games.

It was an absolute success, as over 5000 tests were conducted during the event, collecting over 6200 samples and testing more than 4000 different athletes.

Apart from using MODOC to plan, execute and document ‘In-Competition’ and ‘Out-of-Competition’ controls throughout the  whole period in Tokyo, I was also assigned to design the Tokyo 2020 Backup Forms in paper format so that they would be ready in case anything unexpected happens. It’s always important to have a ‘Plan B’, even if this was not necessary in the end!

Here you can see the different forms which were designed for such purpose:

   · Doping Control Form (DCF)
   · ABP Supplementary Report Form (ABP SRF)
   · Chain of Custody Form (COC)
   · Supplementary Report Form (SRF)
   · Unsuccessful Attempt Report Form (UAR)

All these paper forms were required to be designed in English and French, which are the official languages, and I was supported in the second language translation by my colleagues from Professional Worldwide Controls (PWC).

Last but not least, it was very fun and I really enjoyed the experience in Tokyo. There were good and ‘not so good’ moments as in every single life story, but I would surely repeat this in the future. I can only be grateful with all the people who made this experience unforgettable. See you sooner than later!
